ZUBER & Cie, circa 1830, early 19th century - Lot 587
ZUBER & Cie, circa 1830, early 19th century Sheets 21 to 24 of the panoramic wallpaper entitled "Les Vues du Brésil" (Views of Brazil) manufactured by the Rixheim factory (Haut-Rhin, France), printed by the plate on a hand-brushed background. These 4 strips, with their many details and vibrant colors, are taken from Part IV, "View of a Plantation", and depict the fight between the Portuguese and the natives as they emerge from the thick mist of a jungle of immense trees. This is a rare example of Zuber's production that has come down to us from a private collection. In the background, a battle scene unfolds between, on the left, the Portuguese, dressed in hats and armed with rifles, and, on the right, naked, long-haired natives armed with wooden bows and arrows. At the heart of the action, a planter shot by an arrow occupies a central, dramatic position, while at his side steps a Portuguese who has broken through the mist to finish off a man with the bayonet of his rifle. The standing survivors flee, the women carrying the bodies. In a horizontal echo of this depiction of the opposition between civilization and wilderness, the first shot presents nature dominated by man; a little grass, bushes and shallow rocks are maintained by a fence before the hard-working farm and its pineapple crop; while the last shot offers very green, dense vegetation, stretching into the distance. In the same vein, the staging of the second shot proposes a discourse legitimizing the death of savages in order to defend the planters caught in the middle of their work. Size 190 x 197 cm (Traces of humidity, yellowing, slight cracks and creases, a few accidents) Nota Bene : Protected models - reproduction, even partial, forbidden. "Since it was first produced in Rixheim (France) in 1829, the panoramic set "Views of Brazil" is still hand-printed today using the same techniques and 1693 original antique woodblocks engraved in the 19th century. These plates are classified as historical monuments and are part of France's heritage." ZUBER - 28 rue Zuber, 68170 Rixheim - France. The original complete panoramic set, created by Deltil in 1829, consists of a total of 30 strips, 1693 plates, 247 colors and features a connection from the 30th strip to the 1st strip.
