DAVID D'ANGERS (Pierre-Jean David, known as) [Angers, 1788 - - Lot 20
DAVID D'ANGERS (Pierre-Jean David, known as) [Angers, 1788 - Paris, 1856], French sculptor.
Autograph letter signed. Paris, June 24, 1855; 2 pages in-8°.
Letter explaining the jealousy provoked by his success.
"We were enjoying Colla's well-deserved success quite peacefully, when one of those officious people, like so many of them, happy to cause pain to others, came to disturb our peace by bringing us the literary machinations directed against us. I know from experience that colleagues are not very forgiving of success [...] If I have always despised personal attacks, I feel no less keenly those launched against my friends, even more so when their affection for me may have contributed to attracting them."
