Edo Kingdom of Benin Nigeria Heavily eroded wooden commemora - Lot 207
Edo Kingdom of Benin Nigeria Heavily eroded wooden commemorative head representing the Oba. These heads were owned by chiefs of royal lineage. Our example has preserved fragments of the copper alloy leaves that covered the sculpture's temples, forehead and neck. Despite the ravages of time, this moving testimony to one of Africa's greatest civilizations has retained its expressive beauty. (missing parts and fillings). Early 19th century. H: 38cm Julia Weber collection
