Portrait of Monseigneur Félix Guillaume Antoine Brenart (1720-1794), last bishop of Bruges.
Oil on canvas
70.5 x 95 cm.
(restorations, as is)
Son of Jean-Antoine Brenart, baron de Korbeek-Lo, he studied theology and became a canon in Namur before being appointed bishop of Bruges in 1776. He distinguished himself by his fierce opposition to Emperor Joseph II's religious reforms, which sought to reduce the influence of the Catholic Church in Austria and Belgium. Refusing to submit, he actively defended the rights of the Church and seminaries. Because of his positions, he was forced into exile and took refuge in Cologne, where he died in 1794.
