Jean-Baptisiste CHEREAU (1907-1988)
Le baratin, 1983
Charcoal and oil on paper
65 x 50 cm
Jean-Baptiste Chéreau, 1907-1988, lived and worked between Paris and Huillé, in Anjou. Studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Angers. Painter, lithographer, engraver, illustrator and textile designer. A defector from abstraction, he paints "an image rediscovered between Redon-style symbolism and German Romanticism" (Pierre Courthion). "An eternal traveler, he wanders endlessly in search of new horizons. We fly over cold and heat, populated by ephemeral constructions clinging to the heavens (...)" (Richard Peduzzi). The works for sale feature a variety of expressive techniques: oils, pastels, washes, watercolors and monotypes. The faces he paints are exceptionally deformed or diaphanous. Retrospective exhibition at the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Angers in 1985. Monograph by MASC (Musée de l'Abbaye Sainte-Croix, 2003).
