SLAVERY. Autograph letter signed by Mr.... - Lot 76 - Varenne Enchères
SLAVERY. Autograph letter signed by Mr. L.A. Chaubard, addressed to Mr. Arbanere in Tonneins. Paris, November 3, 1838; 3 1/2 pages in-4°, with address. Very beautiful letter on slavery and on the first attempts of abolition of slavery by Christianity. Mr. Chaubard exposes that ancient slavery was based on the law of nations which gave power of life and death over prisoners of war: Hostis in hostem jus est in infinitum and on this motive of humanity that melius est captivos servare quam occidere. Christianity, teaching "men that they are all brothers in Jesus Christ our savior..." modified this law of nations and made slavery a crime of lèse-humanité. Slavery was first abolished in France in the 7th century by the queen regent St. Batilde, widow of Clovis II, who governed France under the guidance of St. Eloi, she herself was born a slave. "It was therefore in France, and at the instigation of Christianity, that the first example of the emancipation of slaves was given."
